Cambridge Preliminary English Test – Self study pack

If you want a certificate that proves your intermediate (B1) level in English, the PET (Preliminary English Test) is the exam for you. This book can be bought on and comes with two CD ROMs and has an answer key with detailed explanations; it’s ideal if you’re studying autonomously. The book is structured in four complete modules which will help you become familiar with the format of the exam you’re about to take:

1 Reading:

You’ll have to try your hand at reading some brief passages, match the descriptions of eight people with five passages, answer true/fals questions, read some more consistent passages with multiple choice and questions where you need to fill in the blanks, selecting the correct answer from a list of options.

2 Writing:

The exercises, like the test, consist of transforming or rewording sentences, and writing either a short, informal message or a story.

3 Listening:

In this section you’ll find images with questions and multiple-choice answers, audio tracks paired with questions in multiple choice, true/false, or short answer formats.

4 Speaking:

In this module it’s a good idea to practice with a friend or classmate who’s also preparing for the PET, but it’s not essential. The exercise will consist of short questions and answers; you will also see a picture and need to discuss it. Finally you will talk for a minute about a photograph.
