Verbi Modali – Can – Abilità

Uso

I verbi modali (es. Can, Would, Might, May, Should, Could) sono diversi dal verbo To Be (essere) e dagli altri Normal Verbs (gli altri verbi normali). I verbi modali sono sempre utilizzati assieme ai Normal Verbs (es. I can sing, I would like, You should go, He could drive, We might stay). Quindi, possiamo considerare i verbi modali una specie di verbo ausiliare che in sé non ha significato ma invece deve essere combinato con un altro Normal Verb (un verbo normale) o To Be (essere).

Il Verbo Modale Can si può usare per esprimere:

• capacità nel senso di sapere fare una cosa (es. I can drive = So guidare; He can’t sing = Lui non sa cantare; We can’t speak French = Noi non sappiamo parlare francese)
• capacità nel senso di riuscire (es. I can understand when you speak slowly = Riesco a capire quando parli velocemente; David can’t do two things at once = David non riesce a fare due cose contemporaneamente)
• capacità nel senso di percepire (es. I can’t see without my glasses = Non ci vedo senza gli occhiali; I can smell a burning smell = Sento l’odore di bruciato)
