The Assimil method: 2 phases
Assimil is a method based on the idea that intuitive language assimilation is a natural process, rather than an artificial learning task. Assimilation refers to how a child learns a language without even knowing the rules, but just by listening to parents and slowly learning it by association with meanings.
Here we see the method is composed of two phases:
1) a passive phase where the student becomes familiar with English just through listening and comprehension. The student will only be required to listen, read, and comprehend by using the translation provided in the textbook. The student will then repeat and assimilate sounds without having to go through the strain of memorising new words and definitions. This process will be activated automatically in the next phase.
2) an active phase where the student must begin to practice by completing an assignment that demonstrates the association of meanings and translations, while coming to realise how many ideas have been retained with little effort – only through reading and listening. This is made possible through alternating between new lessons which build upon the basics covered in earlier lessons. This automatically activates a process of recognising and learning words, rules, and meanings.
Method effectiveness
This method guarantees maximum effectiveness by following a few simple rules:
– regularity in English study: at least 20-30 minutes a day of studying, doing exercises, or practicing in some way every day. This is particularly crucial in the passive phase to allow yourself to become familiar with the new language.
– review regularly so you can activate the assimilation process.
– repeat the dialogues out loud.
– keep your skills fresh by watching movies and documentaries, or reading books, magazines, and newspapers in English.
– have fun! This method involves enjoying yourself while you learn the language.
Course organisation
The Assimil B2 English course includes a book with 100 lessons, as well as CDs and Mp3 audio reproductions. Each lesson has dialogues and exercises to test your understanding. Every 7 lessons (or, if you prefer, for 20 minutes every day) you’ll find a lesson summary that takes stock of the most important grammar rules you have learned so far. These reviews are key to assimilating the language in the active phase of the method. You can check out a lesson demo by clicking here.
