The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: novel in English

By now we’ve all heard of The Fault in Our Stars, the gripping novel by John Green, published in 2012, which has already become a big hit among both teenagers and adults alike, especially since it has now been adapted to a film of the same name, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.

Synopsis of The Fault in Our Stars

Hazel Grace is sixteen years old and forced by her parents to attend a support group for cancer survivors, like her. Hazel has, in fact, been cured of the terrible disease, diagnosed three years beforehand, thanks to an experimental drug. While attending the support group she meets Augustus, a guy her age, who had to give up his dream of playing basketball when he lost a leg to bone cancer. The two quickly become friends and Hazel suggests that Augustus read her favourite book, Imperial Affliction, which also becomes Augustus’ new favourite book. Through their shared taste in literature they begin to spend more and more time together as their bond grows deeper and deeper, and they become more than just friends. But then something unfortunate happens.

Hazel refuses to go with Augustus to Amsterdam, where the two could have the chance to meet their favourite author in person. Hazel is afraid that she might become ill again and will be far from her friends and family. In fact, Hazel was admitted to the hospital briefly, but upon being released she realises she’s deeply in love with Augustus and goes with him to Amsterdam where they meet Van Houten, author of Imperial Affliction. The meeting doesn’t go as planned and turns out to be a big let-down. After they get home, they must deal with a new set of issues – the return of Augustus’ cancer, and the imminence of his possible death.

The novel is very intense, and is reminiscent of stories from classic literature, which teach that love goes beyond death and that life’s problems can be overcome and won over, not just with the help of friends, but also by the strength we each possess inside of us.
